When King Mancastle and his mighty vassals ride off on crusade, the women left behind are not at all put out—that's a lot less armor polishing for them to do. Of course, when the men get themselves eaten by a dragon and leave a curse that attracts monsters to the castle...well, the women take umbrage with that. Now the blacksmith’s wife Merinor is King, Princess Aeve is the Captain, and the only remaining (and least capable) knight Sir Riddick is tasked with teaching the ladies of the castle how to fight, defend, build, and do all manner of noisy things the men had been doing while the women assumed they were just drunk. Novelist Delilah S. Dawson (Star Wars The Perfect Weapon, As Wicked as She Wants, Wake of Vultures) brings her first original series to comics, and is joined by breakthrough illustrator Ashley A. Woods (Niobe She Is Life) for a rollicking fantasy adventure featuring women reclaiming their lives on their terms.
Ladycastle #1 of 4 eBook Delilah Dawson Ashley A Woods
Ladycastle is, to put it simply, delightful.Delilah Dawson's trademark whimsy is scattered about the book like blood at a crime scene (as in, it's pretty much everywhere, especially at the heart of things, and gives you a clear indication of what's going on and whodunit). It doesn't subvert tropes so much a beat them about the head and shoulders, and there's not a character here that you can't fall in love with.
Woods's art is equally fun, with stylistic choices that suit both the genre and the tone of the writing. Vivid colors and comical expressions lend a feeling of something that, while very professionally accomplished, doesn't take itself to seriously. It's a great read, and something I want to recommend to lots of folks. Especially my 10-year-old neice.
10/10 will read again, and I can't wait for part 2.

Ladycastle #1 of 4 eBook Delilah Dawson Ashley A Woods Reviews
I am unashamedly a fan of Delilah Dawson's writing; she has a way of weaving delight and shattering tropes that I find refreshing and fun to read. Ladycastle is no exception, introducing us to what seems a standard fantasy world and then promptly, near immediately turning it all on its head. From starting the series with a disgruntled singing princess to the surprisingly helpful witch in the well, the entire read was about turning our usual conceptions of fantasy fare and giving it a new twist. Ashley Woods' artwork is fantastic as well; I particularly love how unique each character appears, regardless of whether they are main character or background part.
I can't wait to see where they take the rest of the series!
Looking forward to the second to see where this story will go. Like the concept, it's like a Disney story with strong female characters.
The geek feminist Disney movie we deserve in comic book form. I look forward to following the adventures of Blacksmith King and Lady Knight.
I know, this is just the first of four parts, but I'm in love already!
Adventure and coming of age pair with an inclusive story that just works. We needed this story!
